PURPOSE: A method for authenticating calling subscribers in an ATM exchange using an ATM/B-ISDN UNI(Broadband ISDN User Network Interface) signaling is provided to prevent subscriber numbers from being used illegally using an ATM/B-ISDN UNI signaling, in case that only a line is physically supplied from an ATM exchange and plural subscribers are connected through an ATM multiplexer. CONSTITUTION: Receiving a call setup message from a calling subscriber(S10), an ATM exchange checks whether calling party number IEs(Information Elements) exist in the call setup message(S20). If the calling party number IEs exist and are valid(S30), the ATM exchange checks a password IE(S40). If the password is consistent with a registered password(S50), the ATM exchange checks whether a password change IE exists in the call setup message(S60). In case that the password change IE doesn't exist(S80), the ATM exchange executes call admission and proceeding(S90). In this case, the ATM exchange transmits a call proceeding message, a call alert message, and/or a call connect message in an ATM/B-ISDN UNI signaling method.
