Heading C3P. 1,3-Butadiene is polmyerized in the presence of a catalyst comprising (i) finely divided or porous nickel or a chemically reducible nickel compound, (ii) lithium aluminium hydride or an organometallic compound, and (iii) boron trifluoride, boron trifluoride etherate or hydrogen fluoride, the process being carried out in a single continuous polymerization zone under steady state conditions wherein the weight ratio of polymer to monomer in the zone is at least 9 : 1. Preferably catalyst components (i) and (ii) are premixed with a proportion of the monomer, in the diluent which is suitably a liquid hydrocarbon. The exemplified catalyst is (i) nickel stearate, (ii) triethyl aluminium and (iii) boron trifluoride etherate. The process exhibits negligible gel formation.</p> |
