A furnace for melting metal and holding the molten metal ready for use comprises a refractory bath 1, a heat-conductive refractory vessel 15 supported in the bath and spaced inwardly from the wall of the bath, and a fuel burner 14 producing a high velocity stream of hot gas which impinges centrally on the base of the inner surface of the vessel 15 and is reversed, by the baffle effect of such surface, to sweep upwardly and outwardly over the surface of the metal in the bath and out through a flue 8. In another embodiment, the hot gas escapes from vessel 15 via apertures (19, Fig. 3) provided through the rim of the vessel.
