The bin lid lock consists of an angled lever (2) with one branch (2a) ending in a catch (2b) engaging with a hole (10) in the body (A) of the bin, and the other branch (2c) co-operating with a locking mechanism (3) in the form of a second pivoted lever. One branch (3a) of the locking mechanism lever is in the form of a hook engaging with a slot (2d) in the first lever (2) to hold the catch (2b) in the locked position when the bin is upright, and dropping out of the slot by gravity when the bin is tipped to empty it. A variant of the design has a single lever and a gravity catch.
