PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an error correcting method by which the error information of detected data can be easily correlated to the address of an interleave buffer and by which an error correcting mechanism can be improved easily and inexpensively, to provide an error corrector utilizing the method, and a magnetic tape device. SOLUTION: In the error corrector, a first memory 52 which stores data having correction redundancies, a second memory 60 which stores error information calculated from the data having correction redundancies, an error position information converting section 66 which reads out error position information contained in the error information from the memory 60 and converts the error position information by following a prescribed procedure, and an error correcting section 64 which corrects the error of the data stored in the first memory 52 in accordance with the converted error position information are provided.
