PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a bank note counter by which bank notes can be efficiently counted. SOLUTION: This bank note counter is provided with a photodetector for the photoelectric detection of light emitted from a light source 22 and transmitted through the bank note turned off by a suction pipe so as to generate transmitted light data, counting means 64 for counting the bank note each time the paper money is turned off by the suction pipe, reference transmitted light data storage means 72 for storing the reference transmitted light data of the bank note to be counted, plural-pieces suction discriminating means 63 for comparing the transmitted light data of the bank note generated by the photodetector with the reference transmitted light data stored in the reference transmitted light data storage means and discriminating whether or not the bank notes are turned off by the suction pipe one by one, and count number increasing means 65 for increasing the number of the bank notes counted by the counting means just for N-1 when the plural-pieces suction discriminating means discriminates that the N bank notes are simultaneously taken-in by the suction pipe.
