The invention relates to a medical treatment method for preventing or treating the addiction on, the tolerance or the abuse of benzodiazepines. According to the invention, the method consists in administering a patient melatonine in a daily dose ranging from 0.01 to 100 mg, but smaller than 10 mg in case of prevention, then treatment starting essentially the moment, the patient starts to take one or more benzodiazepines and is continued concurrently with the benzodiazepine administration period, said period being selected according to one of the alternatives (a and b): (a) the period starts the moment the patient starts to take one or more benzodiazepines which are further administered simultaneously with melatonin in a daily dose decreasing progressively until reaching a predetermined stabilized dose of benzodiazepine drug(s) administration; or (b) the period starts the moment the patient starts to take one or more benzodiazepines which are further administered simultaneously with melatonin in a daily dose decreasing progressively until the patient abandons the benzodiazepine drug completely.
