PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an armature chopper apparatus for safe operation of a train cable of a voltage higher than the element breakdown voltage, using a semiconductor switch for lower voltage. SOLUTION: Capacitors 11A, 11B for dividing power supply voltage and semiconductor switches 8A, 8B and 8C, 8D connected in series are allocated for positive and negative terminals respectively, and freewheel diodes 9A to 9D are connected in parallel. A three-level circuit, which can output three voltages, is formed by connecting the diodes 10A, 10B for limiting the neutral voltage to the neutral points of the semiconductor switches 8A and 8B, 8C and 8D and the neutral pout terminal, main motor armatures 5A, 5B, main motor fields 6A, 6B and main smoothing reactor are connected in series.
