PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically and properly change the light dimmer data and/or parameter when the combination of a control part including a storage and a sensor part changes. SOLUTION: This image reader consists of a light source which irradiates an original, a sensor part (111) which converts the light sent from an original into the electric image signals and outputs them, an image signal processing means which processes the image signals outputted from the sensor and a control (101) which controls the light source according to the previously stored control data. In the control method of the image reader, a process S105 is prepared to decide whether at least two combinations are changed among the light source, the sensor and the image reader main body together with a light dimmer process S106 where a light dimmer operation is carried out to obtain the control data on the light source when the change is decided in the process S105 and a storage process S106 where the control data obtained in the light dimmer process S106 in the control part.
