Provided is a catalyst for the photo-induced and site-specific cleavage of DNA, especially for use in a biological system. The catalyst used is a photosensitive texaphyrin. Cleavage of the DNA is achieved by contacting the DNA with the texaphyrin and then exposing the texaphrin to light with a wavelength in the range of about 650 to 900 nanometers, preferably in the presence of oxygen. |
