Disclosed is a variable flow rate valve from a coffee machine (not shown) for producing higher flow rate for "standard" coffee and a lower flow rate for "espresso" coffee. Flow of coffee beverage passing in via passage 15 and out via passage 16 is controlled by adjustment of nut 28. When nut 28 is at a left-most position a high force is required to move base portion 23 to the right so a relatively high flow rate is provided. When nut 28 is at a right-most position a lower force is required to move base portion 23 to the right, so a relatively low flow rate is provided.
