Process for the preparation of a concentrated terpenoid extract from the bark of birch trees Betula alba and related species, is new. The process the preparation of a concentrated terpenoid extract from the bark of birch trees Betula alba and related species, is as follows: (a) the bark is crushed; (b) it is screened; (c) it is crushed a second time to the desired particle size; (d) it is extracted with toluene at the boil; (e) the solution is filtered and evaporated; (f) the residue is dissolved in boiling 90% ethanol, then cooled to 4-8 deg C; and (g) the solution is filtered allowing recovery of the triterpene. Independent claims cover the extract per se, having a triterpene content of at least 3%, and its use in dermopharmaceutical and cosmetic compositions.
