PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To compress data which cannot be dealed with by continuity compression, even if the amounts of continuous data are small. SOLUTION: Data to be compressed are obtained by each unit word, and multi-word continuity compression and dynamic continuity compression is conducted, when the prescribed number of unit words are continuous in the same row and they are continuous in the row of the same data pattern, in addition to continuity compression. This device is provided with a continuity counting means A22 for counting the number of continuity of the obtained data to be compressed, a continuity compression means A23 for operating continuity compression, and a dynamic conversion means A24 for operating dynamic conversion, and a dynamic/multi- word continuity counting means A25 for counting the number of continuity of the prescribed number of unit words in the row of the same pattern, and for counting the number of continuity of the prescribed number of unit words in the same row, and a dynamic/multi-word continuity compressing means A26 for conducting dynamic continuity compression and multi-word continuity compression. Also, the result of the compression is indicated by a prescribed code, and the prescribed code is referred to at conducting of decompression.
