PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method of stabilizing an object lens by controlling the focus speed of a pickup head while performing a layer jump operation on the multi-layer optical disk of an optical information reproducing device. SOLUTION: The method is characterized by providing the pickup head 32 having an objective lens 44, an actuator 42 and a counter 40 and by providing steps for driving the objecting lens 44 to perform the layer jump operation in response to a kick pulse signal from a signal processor 36 by the actuator 42, starting the counter 40 in order to generate a counter value simultaneously with the transmission of the kick pulse signal to the actuator 42 for kicking the objective lens 44 from a first focus, processing an RF level signal Sr from the pickup head 32 and the counter value Cv to generated speed control data Dv and driving the objective lens 44 to a second focus via the actuator 42 in response to speed control data Dv.
