PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To solve a problem of a conventional solid-state image sensing device that has had a narrow dynamic range because an output of the conventional solid-state image sensing device provided with a vertical overflow drain is increased as the luminous quantity increases even when excess charges are swept out to the overflow drain, it is required to set a higher voltage to a substrate in order to prevent charges equal to or over the maximum transfer charges from entering a charge transfer register thereby decreasing the maximum electric charge quantity in a linear region (a region where storage electric charges are proportional to an incident luminous quantity). SOLUTION: A part of the stored electric charges in a photoelectric conversion region is swept out to the substrate by applying a sweep-out pulse to the substrate just before reading the storage charges in the photoelectric conversion region through the application of a read pulse so as to prevent electric charges equal to or over the maximum transfer charge quantity from entering the charge transfer register.
