PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To develop a transmission type or transmission and reflection type liquid crystal display device which can be easily made thin and lightweight and which has excellent display quality. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device consists of a transmission type liquid crystal display panel L having at least a liquid crystal cell, illumination device 91 disposed on one or more side faces of the panel L, and an optical path converting sheet 11 disposed on the back side of the panel L opposite to the observation side. The optical path converting sheet reflects the incident light from the illumination device on the optical path converting slope A1 to the observation side of the panel. In the obtained device, the incident light from the illumination devices disposed on the side faces of the panel is efficiently transmitted by using the liquid crystal cell substrate, while the optical path of the incident light or transmitted light is efficiently reflected to the observation side of the panel to be used for the liquid crystal display. Thus, the back light mechanism is obtained by disposing the illumination device on the side faces and by using optical path converting sheet excellent in its thin form, and therefore the obtained transmission type liquid crystal display device is excellent in its thin and lightweight form and in the display quality. |
