摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head which supplies a stable longitudinal bias and which has high sensitivity and stable reproducing performance, and to provide a method of producing that head for a reproducing head having a narrow gap length so as to reproduce the recorded signals of short wavelengths for the purpose of higher recording density. SOLUTION: A pair of laminated longitudinal bias layers having three layers of each pair of hard magnetic films, nonmagnetic films and soft magnetic films are formed on the free magnetic layer of a GMR device. The hard magnetic films and soft magnetic films are antiferromagnetically coupled through the nonmagnetic films to produce extremely stable magnetization direction. The hard magnetic films and free magnetic layers are ferromagnetically coupled to apply a stable longitudinal bias field on the free magnetic layer. By forming the laminated longitudinal bias layers, since a leaked magnetic field by magnetic charges on the end faces is suppressed and no unnecessary magnetic field is applied on the free magnetic layer or the fixed magnetic layer, reproduction characteristics with little production of noise, good symmetry, stability and high sensitivity can be obtained.
