PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide branching structure for a waveguide whose stable single mode operation is allowed and moreover whose manufacture is easy. SOLUTION: One linear waveguide (a) is symmetrically Y branched into two linear waveguides b and c via a taper waveguide t. Both dimensions of inlets of the linear waveguide b and the linear waveguide c are formed smaller than the width W of the linear waveguide (a) by forming the branching angle 2×θβbetween the linear waveguide b and the linear waveguide c smaller than the opening angle 2×θαof the taper waveguide t.
