The invention relates to a process for preparing cationic emulsifiers which consists in reacting polyamides with aliphatic acids in the presence of p-toluenesulphonic acid as catalyst, thereby preparing cationic emulsifiers which further react with acrylic or methacrylic acid, thus preparing, depending on the molar ratio, either anionic emulsifiers which react further with polyamides in the presence of glacial acetic acid preparing cationic emulsifiers, or anionic emulsifiers further reacting with polyamides, preparing amphoretic emulsifiers or cationic emulsifiers.
