Compounds derived from polyazacycloalkane derivatives with at least 4 cyclic nitrogen atoms with good heavy metal-removing properties. Compounds derived from polyazacycloalkane derivatives with at least 4 cyclic nitrogen atoms have at least 1 N substituted by groups with neutral donor atoms, from those of formula (I) and (II) with the exclusion of 1,4,7,10-tetrakis(2-(methylthioethyl)-1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane, 1,4,8,11-tetrakis(2-(methylthioethyl)-1,4,8,11-tetraazacyclododecane, 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1-(N,N-dimethylacetamide), 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1-(N,N-dibutylacetamide), 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1-(N-methylacetamide), 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1-(N,N-diisobutylacetamide), 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1-1,4,7,10-tetraacetamide and , 1,4,7,10-tetraazacyclododecane-1,4,7,10-tetrakis(N,N-dimethylacetamide):a (CH2)nC(O)N(R<1>)(R<2>) (I) (CH2)pS(R<3>) (II) n and p = 1-3; R<1> - R<3> = H or 1-4C alkyl, provided that at least one of R<1> and R<2> is not H when n is 2. Independent claims are included for: (1) silica gel modified using the above compound; and (2) a coordination complex comprising the compound as the organic ligand.
