摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a liquid crystal display device having high brightness and high contrast ratio without any polarizing plate or with a sheet of polarizing plate. SOLUTION: The liquid crystal display device provided with a pair of substrates each of which has electrodes and at least one of which is a transparent substrate, a liquid crystal layer interposed between the substrates, projecting parts each having an oblique surface inclined to the horizontal direction of the substrates on the transparent substrate side and the liquid crystal layer side, light reflection parts and light absorption parts disposed on the exiting side of the light made incident from the transparent substrate side to the liquid crystal layer and passing through the liquid crystal layer and a voltage applying means for polarizing the light made incident to the liquid crystal layer is characterized that the light exiting path of the light passing through the liquid crystal layer can be selected between the light reflection parts (in the case of a reflection type liquid crystal) or a light transmission parts (in the case of a transmission type liquid crystal) and the light absorption parts by applying an electric field to the liquid crystal layer.
