PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make thinner a liquid crystal display device having an light irradiating means consisting of a plurality of light sources with different colors of emitted light and to make easy the process of balancing the colors of the light which illuminates a liquid crystal display means constituting the liquid crystal display device. SOLUTION: In the liquid crystal display device consisting of a liquid crystal panel to form an image according to the information of the display image and a back light 101 to illuminate the screen of the liquid crystal panel with light, the back light 101 comprises red, blue and green rod-like light sources 106, 107, 108 and a square light guide plate 102 to convert the light from the light sources into surface light. Each rod-like light source is disposed along the periphery of the light guide plate 102 so that the light emitted from the light source is made to enter the side faces (the cross- sectional face of the plate) of the light guide plate. The light sources are disposed in such a manner that the total length of the periphery of the side face of the light guide plate where the green rod-like light source 108 having high spectral luminous efficiency is disposed larger than the total length of the periphery on the side face where the blue light source having low spectral luminous efficiency is disposed and than the total length of the periphery on the side face where the red rod-like light source having low spectral luminous efficiency is disposed.
