PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a free-run pull-in method capable of pulling a permanent magnet rotor synchronous motor into speed-controlled driving suitably even while it is in a free-run rotation. SOLUTION: Aδ-axis current command and aγ-axis current command are set to prescribed values respectively, and aδ-axis voltage command and aγ-axis voltage command, corresponding to the setδ-axis current command andγ-axis current command respectively, are generated to supply current to a synchronous motor. The currents of at least two phases of the synchronous motor undergoγ-δconversion, based onγ-δcoordinate-axis position information at the immediately previous period of sampling to determine aγ-axis current detected value and aδ-axis current detected value. Based on a predeterminedγ-axis andδ-axis current-voltage equation, aγ-axis current estimated value and aδ-axis current estimated value as well as a y-axis induction voltage estimated value and aδ-axis induction voltage estimated value are determined, to estimate the symbol of angular velocity, an angle velocity estimated value, and the position ofγ-axis. Thus, the vector control for ordinary operation is started based on the angular velocity and the position information of a rotor obtained by free-run pull-in processing.
