PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a head cleaning method which suppresses the degradation in cleaning effect by the vibration, etc., of a cleaning roller, the lowering in life by chipping, etc., of the roller, the damage of head and cylinder surfaces, etc., when the roller is brought into contact with the cylinder in loading, in a device for mounting the cylinder rotating at a high speed to a level equivalent to those of the conventional devices which rotate at a low speed. SOLUTION: A period when the cylinder rotates in a steady state at a number of revolutions lower than the prescribed number of revolutions at which recording and reproducing are carried out is disposed and the cleaning roller is brought into contact with the cylinder during the time, thereby, the head cleaning mechanism which has a stable cleaning effect and which is difficult in the occurrence of a side effect is realized.
