PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To rightly detect a vehicle even when a vehicle passes backward or repeats forward/backward movement including the case of passing plural vehicles while keeping a short vehicular gap. SOLUTION: This detector is provided with plural vehicle separators 1 and 2 installed along a vehicle advancing direction for detecting the presence/absence of vehicles by emitting light in the direction perpendicular to the vehicle advancing direction and receiving light, an axle sensor 3 for detecting passing of the tires of the vehicle, and a vehicle detecting means 4 for performing a verification while referring to the output signal of the axle sensor 3 between relevant transitions when the output signal transitions of the plural vehicle separators 1 and 2 are matched to a predetermined transition for forward vehicle or transition for backward vehicle, and discriminating the presence of the passing vehicle when verification conditions are established.
