The safety system for a textile cutting table with a mobile cross-beam (22) which carries a cutter head (32) has bars (40, 42) at each end for detecting obstacles at the sides of the table. These carry light emitters (e.g. 50), e.g. IR laser diodes, which produce a beam across the table parallel to the beam, and photoreceptors (52, 62). These allow objects on the table in the path of the cross-beam to be detected and also detect movement of one of the bars due to encountering an obstacle. An Independent claim is included for a cutting table fitted with the device.
