(4-(4-Cyanobenzoyl)-phenyl) alpha -D-glycopyranosides (I) are new. Glycopyranosides of formula (I) and their esters (obtained by esterification of at least one OH in R by a 2-4C alkanoic or cycloalkanoic acid, specifically acetic acid) are new: R = alpha -D-glucopyranosyl, alpha -D-galactopyranosyl, alpha -D-mannopyranosyl, alpha -D-arabinopyranosyl, alpha -D-lyxopyranosyl or alpha -D-ribopyranosyl. An Independent claim is included for the preparation of (I).
