PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a trimming device and method capable of detecting a missing portion of a punch. SOLUTION: This trimming device includes a punch 20 for cutting a dam bar 14 of a lead frame 10 and a detector 30 for measuring electrical characteristics of the punch 20. The electrical characteristics of the punch 20 are measured by the detector 30 before the dam bar 14 is cut. The presence of a missing portion of the punch 20 is detected by comparing the value obtained from the measurement and a value measured when the punch 20 has no missing portion.
