<p>To produce heat-treated carbon bodies in open-pit, ring furnaces, green carbon bodies are heat treated whilst being surrounded by a packing of a carbonaceous particulate material containing as a constituent green petroleum coke in a blend with calcined and/or recycled petroleum coke particles. If the green petroleum coke is green delayed petroleum coke, the balance of the packing material is selected from calcined delayed petroleum coke, recycled packing material containing heat-treated delayed petroleum coke and/or mixtures of these; if the green petroleum coke used in the blend is green fluid petroleum coke, then the balance of the packing material is heat-treated calcined fluid coke. The green carbon bodies are heat treated at a predetermined temperature and for a time sufficient to obtain carbon bodies with satisfactory electrical properties and to achieve conversion of the green petroleum coke content of the packing material. The heat-treated bodies are recovered for the electrolytic electrodes and the converted packing material is recycled as packing material.</p> |
