The encoder has stationary coils (14-17) arranged alternately with permanent magnets (9-13), on the circumference (8) of a stationary plate (1), spanning 170 deg . Adjacent magnets are of opposite polarity. A shaft (2) supports an arm (18), at its recess (3) spanning preset angle (6). A permanent magnet (19) is attached at the free end of the arm. The angle (6) is set larger than half the span angle 170 deg .
