Simulation procedures which describe the data record for carrying out three-dimensional machining by means a CNC-controlled machining appliance, such as a cutting machine, often require either direct coding of the workpiece or modeling of the workpiece by a CAD-system followed by conversion into an equivalent CNC-part program. When the workpiece does not conform to the set requirements, however, problems and complexity arise since it is problematic which variations should be used to fabricate the standard, proper workpiece. To simplify the process and avoid such problems, the desired machining should be set by an output data set/record describing ideal machining instructions for the e.g. cutting machine, and a computer unit (1) then ascertains from the output data set/record a control data set/record for the control unit (10) controlling the e.g. cutting machine (3). At least one two-dimensional projection of the processing (cutting) can be ascertained from the outpu t data set/record and/or the control data set/record (4) and then represented via a display device.
