A process for the production of N-alkenyl amides comprises reaction of the corresponding NH-amide with acetylene in the liquid phase in the presence of a basic alkali metal compound and an alkoxy cocatalyst. A process for the production of N-alkenyl amides comprises reaction of the corresponding NH-amide with acetylene in the liquid phase in the presence of a basic alkali metal compound and a cocatalyst, whereby the cocatalyst is of formula (1) or (2). R<1>O-(CH2CH2CH2CH2O)n-H (1) R<1>O-(CH2CH2CH2CH2O)n-R<2> (2) R<1>,R<2> = 1-6C alkyl or 2-6C alkenyl or R<1> and R<2> together are both a butenyl unit; n = 1-3.
