A slot antenna assembly (20) for a wireless communications device having a printed wiring board element (14) defining at least a ground plane (16) and an input/output RF connection point (22). The antenna assembly further includes a dielectric element (40) having a pair of opposed major surfaces (44, 56); a conductive feed circuit (60) disposed upon one of the major surface (56), the feed circuit (42) including a pair of resonator arms (46, 48) oriented approximately parallel to each other, the pair of resonator arms being coupled together via a conductive connection (54) and defining a substantially elongate slot, one of the pair of resonator arms being conductively coupled to the feed circuit (60), and the other of the pair of resonator arms being conductively coupled to the ground plane of the printed wiring board. The slot antenna according to the present invention may be disposed within an associated wireless communications device related to a ground plane element of a printed wiring board, or may be disposed separately away from the associated wireless communications device.
