The socket (130) for connecting hoses consists of an annular section (132), into which the hose end fits, with an upwardly-projecting rim (148) and a bevelled edge (150) on the inner end of this. Compression components (136) are fitted on the far side of a series of gaps into which ridges (142) on a plug connector fit. The inner diameter of the compression components is at least as large as the diameter of the socket at the point where the bevelled edge and projecting rim intersect.
