A separator belt, Fig. 3, for a potato harvester comprises two endless bands 1 spanned by flexible, finger-carrying plates 2 secured to the bands and each carrying rows of fingers 4 of elastomeric material, the plates having relatively stiffened regions adjacent their leading and trailing edges with a row 4' of fingers extending across each of these regions. As shown in Fig. 1, the plates are stiffened by transverse metal bars 6 located, e.g. by vulcanisation, in bead-like thickened portions 5 of the plates. The bars are flattened at both ends 7 which are secured to the bands 1 by rivets 8. Only the bar at the leading edge of each plate or the bars at both edges is/are secured to the bands. The separator belt may run at its discharge end in a nip between drive rollers 9 and pressure rollers 11, Fig. 3, the latter forcing the plates 2 into contact with the rollers 9. In a modification, Fig. 4, the adjacent edges of adjacent plates 2 are provided with overlapping projecting lips 12, 13, the trailing edge lips 12 preferably overlying the leading edge lips 13. The plates 2 and the fingers 4, which may be integrally formed therewith, may be of rubber or synthetic plastics. In use, stones and lumps of earth sink between the fingers whilst the relatively lighter potatoes roll over the tips of the fingers down the slope of the separator belt. As the belt passes around the drive rollers 9 the rows of fingers spread away from each other and the stones and lumps trapped between the fingers are discharged. |
