Novel phosphodiesterases and genes thereof. More particularly speaking, 11 type phosphodiesterases (PDE 11) and genes thereof, namely, phosphodiesterase selected from (A) proteins having the amino acid sequences represented by SEQ ID NOs:2, 4, 6 and 39, and (B) proteins having amino acid sequences derived from the amino acid sequences represented by SEQ ID NOs:2, 4, 6 and 39 by deletion, substitution or addition of one or more amino acids and having an activity of hydrolyzing a cyclic nucleotide; genes thereof; and methods of characterizing, identifying and selecting phosphodiesterase inhibitors by using the same.
