To form a micro-structure on a metallic surface, with projections in a height of 1-1000 microns m and a distribution density of 0-500 microns m, the metallic surface is covered by a layer of a metal or a metal alloy and bonded to it by diffusion to give an inter-metallic bonding action. The cladding metal has a lower melting point than the substrate metal, to be heated to its softening temp. for a time span while the micro projections are formed from the inter-metal bond. The surplus coating metal is removed by etching or an electrolyte.
