Production of a rubber composition containing silica comprises: (a) mixing a first batch of a rubber component, carbon black and processing aid; (b) mixing a second batch of a rubber component, silica, silane coupling agent and processing aid; and (c) mixing the first and second batches. Production of a rubber composition containing 20-100 parts by weight (pbw) silica per 100 pbw of rubber components comprises: (a) mixing a first batch of a rubber component, carbon black and processing aid, especially oil; (b) mixing a second batch of a rubber component, silica, silane coupling agent and processing aid, especially oil; (c) mixing the first and second batches, optionally with addition of other additives and vulcanization chemicals; and (d) optionally performing one or more mixing steps to produce the finished composition.
