This invention relates to a process for the production of (1R,5S)-bicyclo[3.2.0]heptan-3-one. This compound is useful inter alia as an intermediate for the synthesis of analogues of gabapentin (Neurontin¹). The reaction process is illustrated by the following scheme: wherein R is an alkyl or an aryl group; X is iodine or bromine; and R' is an alkyl group.
