PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a condensed detergent composition for laundry, hardly damaging the effects for improving whiteness of a fluorescent whitening agent. SOLUTION: This detergent composition for the laundry consisting essentially of (a) a nonionic surfactant represented by the general formula (I): R1-(EO)m-(PO)n-H (wherein R1 is an 8-20C alkyl or alkenyl; EO is ethylene oxide; PO is propylene oxide; m is an average number of added moles of ethylene oxide, and the number of 4-18; and n is an average number of added moles of propylene oxide, and the number of 1-4), and (b) sodium carbonate, and containing <5% sodium sulfate is characterized by (c) a biphenyl-type fluorescent whitening agent and (d) an aminostilbene type fluorescent whitening agent in the weight ratio of the components (c)/(d) regulated so as to be 0.1-1.0, included therein.
