A re-usable plastics closure 11, strengthened by gussets 21, is applied to a container 10 by forcibly slotting its inverted U-shaped channel 23 over the edge of the container opening so that inner and outer flanges 15 and 22 of the closure 11 engage opposite sides of a bead 13. The flange 22 which is formed by a plurality of tabs (27), Fig. 1 (not shown), flexes outwardly allowing member 25 to pass over bead 13 and then resumes its vertical dependence. A gasket 37 forms a seal with the container 10, and a metal ring 35 is transferred manually from a groove 32 to a groove 34 where it maintains closure 11 on the container 10. The cap may be removed by reversing these operations. In a modification, Fig. 5 (not shown), a band of stiff flat material 40, is applied over the tabs (27) after the closure has been applied to the container, thereby securing the tabs in a closed position. Again, the container side wall may have a series of grooves for co-acting with a series of beads on the inner surface of the outer flange.</p> |
