Continuous thin narrow film, ribbon, band, foil, or tube or continuous fibrous material consisting of a thermoplastic linear high polymer is false twisted by passing it between overlapping surfaces of the annular rotating bodies 13, 13' of the same diameter but rotating in opposite directions with their axes parallel, the film travelling along the chord bisecting the overlapping surfaces. The overlapping surfaces are preferably composed of a synthetic rubber and the bodies are positioned such that the distance between the centres O, O' of the bodies is not less than the internal diameter 2r of a body. Also the difference between the distance between the centres O, O' and the internal diameter 2r is not less than the width of the film 6 and not greater than twice that width. The film is preferably a crystallised film which has been drawn in its longitudinal direction only. The film may be passed through a heating zone before being passed between the overlapping surfaces to produce a bulky yarn. A cooling device may also be provided prior to the false twisting discs, or cooling water may be applied continuously onto the disc surfaces. Alternatively a fibrillated fibre can be prepared by passing a drawn film between the overlapping surfaces.
