PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a subject observing instrument allowing clear observation of the structure of a blood vessel, etc., running in the direction of the depth from the surface of a subject such as an organism. SOLUTION: A first filter set 28 consisting of plural filters with wide half- value width and a second filter set 29 consisting of filters R2, G2 and B2 with narrow half-value width are mounted on inner/outer circumferences of a rotary filter 27 disposed on the light passage of illumination light from a light source 24, and a filter set to be set on the light passage can be selected by a rotary filter switching mechanism 32. When the second filter set 29 is set, a subject is illuminated with light with narrow half-value width and long distance between wavelengths. Therefore, endoscopic images taken with different transmitting distances in the direction of the depth of an organism 7 are obtained and displayed on an observation monitor 6, so that the structure of a blood vessel, etc., in the direction of the depth from the surface can be observed clearly in different colors.
