PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for transferring a rod-shaped material in a tobacco processing industry and provide an apparatus therefor. SOLUTION: The residence times of vessels 4, 10 in a full-vessel holding station 14 are detected. The supply of the vessel to a vessel emptying apparatus 56 is controlled according to the detected residence time. The apparatus is provided with detection devices 20, 24, 34, 44, 54, 78 to detect the residence times of the vessels 4, 10, 58 in the full-vessel holding stations 14, 28, 38, 48 and a controller to control a replacing apparatus 80 according to the detected residence time.
