PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a highly pure diol free from an aldehyde. SOLUTION: A primary amine or a phosphite capable of being separated from the diol by distillation is added to a crude reaction product liquid obtained by using a dialdehyde as a starting material and carrying out the reducing reaction of the dialdehyde in the presence of a hydrogenation catalyst and hydrogen, and containing the diol, and the resultant mixture is distilled to provide the objective highly pure diol.
