PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an organopolysiloxane having a carboxyl group at one end and to provide a method which can produce the same in one reaction step. SOLUTION: The organopolysiloxane modified with a carboxyl group at one end represented by formula (1) [wherein R1, R2, R3, R4 and R5 are each a 1-20C alkyl group, a 4-10C cycloalkyl group or a 6-10C aryl group; R6 is a 1-5C alkylene group, a 2-5C alkenylene group or a 6-10C arylene group; (n) is an integer of >=1; (m) is 0 or an integer of >=1; n+m=4 to 1,100 (an average degree of polymerization of a polysiloxane segment); X is a 2-20C alkylene group; Y is an exyalkylene group represented by OCH2CH2, OCH(CH3)CH2 or OCH2CH(CH3)] is produced by reacting a silicone having a hydroxyl group at one end represented by formula (2) with an acid anhydride represented by formula (3).
