PURPOSE: A method is provided, for increasing the molecular weight of polybutadiene or polyisoprene manufactured by a gas phase polymerization using a polymerization catalyst and for reducing the reduction of a catalytic activity due to the generation of by-products. CONSTITUTION: The method for increasing the molecular weight of polybutadiene or polyisoprene in the polymerization of 1,3-butadiene or isoprene in a gas phase in the presence of a catalyst containing Ni, Co or Ti comprises the introduction of a hydrocarbon having a low boiling point and high volatility. Preferably the hydrocarbon is selected from the group consisting of isopentane, neopentane, isobutane, isohexane, butane, pentane, hexane, 3-methylpentane, and 2-methylpentane. The catalyst containing Ni is selected from the group consisting of nickel carboxylates and organic complexes of nickel. The reaction is preferably carried out in the presence of an inert granular material.
