PURPOSE: A method for preparing acetic acid is provided, to reduce the amount of by-products containing propionic acid and its precursors and derivatives and to increase the selectivity of acetic acid, by using a specific amount of phosphine oxide in carbonylation with an iridium catalyst. CONSTITUTION: The method comprises the step of reacting carbon monoxide with methanol and/or its reactive derivatives in a liquid reaction composition comprising an iridium carbonylation catalyst, methyl iodide, methyl acetate, water and acetic acid, wherein the reaction composition contains a monodentate phosphine oxide compound in 200 mol per gram atom of iridium or less. The monodentate phosphine oxide compound is represented by (R1R2R3)P=O, wherein R1, R2 and R3 are independent each another and are a substituted or unsubstituted alkyl group of C1-C10, or a substituted or unsubstituted aryl group of C5-C15. Preferably the reaction composition contains further at least one accelerator selected from the group consisting of Ru, Os, Re, Cd, Hg, Zn, Ga, In and W.
