Natural or synthetic polyamide fibres are bleached by treating them with an aqueous liquor containing a peroxide which is performic acid or hydrogen peroxide which is in free form or in the form of an adduct, e.g. a perborate or percarbonate, a stabiliser and 0.01-0.2 moles per mole of peroxide groups of an aliphatic, aromatic or cycloaliphatic dicarboxylic acid having up to 10 carbon atoms or an anhydride or water-soluble salt of such an acid. The peroxide may be present in the liquor in an amount equivalent to more than 0.5 g per litre of active oxygen and the stabiliser which may be tetra sodium pyrophosphate, sodium tripolyphosphate, tetrapolyphosphate or hexapolyphosphate, magnesium silicate or phosphate or nitrilo triacetic acid or ethylene diaminotetraacetic acid or a magnesium or alkali metal salt thereof or mixture thereof, may be present in an amount of 20-200% of the amount of active oxygen. The dicarboxylic acid or anhydride or salt thereof may be succinic acid, tartaric acid, glutaric acid, 3-nitrophthalic acid, 4-nitrophthalic acid, 3-chlorophthalic acid, 4-chlorophthalic acid, 3, 4-dichlorophthalic acid, cyclohexane-1, 2-dicarboxylic acid, 4, 5-dichlorocyclohexane-1, 2-dicarboxylic acid, phthalic acid, maleic acid, phthalic anhydride, maleic anhydride fumaric acid or an alkali metal salt thereof. Bleaching may be effected at 50‹-100‹C. The liquor may also contain an optical brightener of the formula sodium hydroxymethane sulphonate, hexamethylenetetramine, octylphenol octaglycol ether, nonylphenol decaglycol ether, an adduct of castor oil to 10 moles of ethylene oxide and sodium polyacrylate. Flock, yarn, silver, woven, non-woven or knitted fabric made from wool, silk or polycondensates of caprolactam, of hexamethylene diamine and adipic acid or of omega-aminoundecanoic acid may be treated. Simultaneous bleaching and dyeing may be effected by incorporating dyes in the bleaching liquor. |
