PURPOSE: A device for operating a friction unit of an automatic transmission is provided to improve shift performance by adopting a deformable tube into a chamber and by restraining unnecessary operation of an unselected friction unit. CONSTITUTION: A clutch drum(50) and a clutch hub(70) respectively have plural friction plates(52,72) contacting to each other or separating from each other. A piston(110) moves by the hydraulic pressure supplied to a chamber(100) of the clutch drum to operate the friction plates. A deformable tube(80) is formed in the chamber. The tube occupies the chamber by stretching vertically when hydraulic pressure is completely released. Therefore, abnormal operation of a clutch is prevented.
